Description
German chamomile is an upright annual herb growing to around 60 cm. The plants are multi-stemmed with feathery, light green leaves and daisy like flowers with yellow centres and white ray florets. The flowers bloom in mid-late summer. When crushed, the flowers usually have a sweet apple-like scent.
Uses
Culinary – Chamomile is a lovely herb to grow and use regularly as a refreshing herb tea. Fresh, newly opened flowers can be used as a garnish on green salads, vegetable dishes, and sweet dishes. The flowers can be set in ice cubes and served in cold drinks.
Medicinal – Chamomile flowers have a strong action on the nervous system and help reduce the effects of stress and tension. Chamomile has a soothing and mildly sedative effect which can help the body to relax and promote a peaceful sleep. It can also help relieve headaches brought on by stress or over concentration.
Chamomile also has a calming effect on the digestive system and is commonly used for reflux, colic, abdominal pain, and diarrhoea.
For external use chamomile has antibiotic and anti-inflammatory properties and can be used for sunburn, wounds, and eczema. It can be used as a facial steam to open the pores, kill bacteria, and soothe inflammation
Chamomile tea can also be used as a rinse for blond hair to restore highlights.
Caution – Some people are allergic to the Asteraceae daisy family. If so, the use of chamomile should be avoided in these cases.
Growing conditions
Chamomile prefers full sun and well-drained soil.
